A lovely and very unique Victorian era piqué hatpin.
Piqué refers to a type of jewelry in which a precious metal such as gold or silver is inlaid into another material. In this case, it is gold inlaid into tortoise shell.
Piqué pieces are becoming increasingly difficult to find, and I can count on one hand the number of piqué hatpins I have seen, let alone one as lovely as this!
The pin section is made of steel, and the top is a sterling silver setting with tortoise ring, inlaid with gold stars. The best example of a piqué hatpin I have ever seen. I just love the celestial motif!

Lovely condition overall, especially considering age. There is some light patina to the steel pin section, a slight curve to it as well. Some very minor wear to the piqué, with a couple of the stars missing, but this is not at all noticeable.
