Sepia is the art of using hair as a medium in painting. The hair is cut into tiny pieces or pulverized and suspended in paint and brushed onto a vellum.
These often were made as mourning pieces, such as this one, and depict grave scenes with weeping willows and urns.
This is a beautiful such example, and quite rare! There are little butterflies on the base of the urn.
I would date this piece from the mid 19th century. It would be a lovely display and would be a unique and special gift.

The color is stunning and the sepia painting has held up beautifully. There is a crack in the vellum (or the material on which the painting was done) but it is not major and doesn't seem to have effected the structural integrity of the piece.
The frame has some wear to the corners and backing as shown in the photos.
