This exceptional velvet jacket dates from the early 1900s, circa 1902-1903.
A maker's label inside indicates this piece was made by William H. McKnew. Originally opened in 1862 by Lockwood, Hufty, and Taylor, the establishment is touted as being the "oldest cloak and suit house in Washington" in a 1902 newspaper article.
William H. McKnew passed away in 1902 and the house was taken over by Anton Stephan. It closed in 1911.
Black velvet with a dramatic lace covered collar. The original silk lining has been entirely replaced somewhat recently making this a very wearable piece.
Three buttons and three hook and eye closures at the waist. The bust is quite open and it has the quintessential pigeon front look and style so popular during this early Edwardian time period.
+++ Measurements +++
27" max waist with a very open bust up to 40"
+++ Condition +++
Lovely condition overall. Original silk lining was removed and replaced and it is quite wearable with some care. Some lace breaks and small holes on the collar area. Some fading and fraying on some of the trim. Very clean and in great shape for her age.
