This stunning black silk velvet cape circa 1890s is a truly spectacular piece.
Extremely soft silk velvet, silk lining that is incredibly eye catching, and gorgeous soutache and bead work.
At one time there was a maker's label in the lining, but it has sadly been removed. The materials and construction of this piece are so fine, I would have loved to know who made it!
Very large, chonky hook and bar closures at the collar and partway down the center front. Small pocket inside the lining. Wide, decorated collar that can be worn up or down.
Definitely a statement piece!

This piece is a wounded bird. Best for study, display, or repair.
- Silk lining is tearing around the stress areas at the collar and seams
- Silk velvet is balding / worn around the collar and edges (especially around the clasps at the front)
- Multiple hooks are missing and/or loose
- Some minor bead / soutache loss
Overall this piece would be wearable with care after some repairs, as the silk velvet is still surprisingly strong. However it would also be excellent for study, as some of the seams are already open and you can easily see the construction details. Also quite lovely for display even in its current condition.
