This stunning brooch is honestly one of the best Scottish agate pieces I've ever come across! Not only does it feature two moons, but it is fashioned in solid gold, which you will almost never see, as most of these pieces were made in silver.
I love the double moon here, a wider crescent and one with more accentuated horns somewhat loosely fastened onto it. It is not quite "en tremblant," but the smaller moon does have some movement, which appears to be intentional to the design.
The points of a crescent are also called its horns, and the smaller moon on this brooch is quite a good example of why. Crescent horns, upturned as such, are often associated with the Greek goddess Artemis and her Roman counterpart Diana, goddess of the hunt, who is depicted commonly with an upturned crescent moon on her head, worn as a diadem, a symbol of feminine beauty, power, and wisdom. The sign of the horns is also a symbol of protection against the evil eye.
These pieces, often known as Victorian Scottish hardstone jewelry or Scottish pebble jewelry, exploded in popularity during the Victorian era as a result of Queen Victoria's love of everything Scottish.
