Beautiful 9k gold earrings circa 1870s to early 1880s.
They have dormeuse ear wires that are hinged in the back and hook on the front side, meaning the ear wires go through the back of your ear rather than the front.
Marked "9c" on the back of each earring.
They feature two puffy crescent horns (crescent moons with a more exaggerated curve), one larger than the other, one facing down, the other facing up. They swing freely on a center hinge shaped like a cross. The puffy moons are faceted for extra shine.
The symbol of the crescent horns is often associated with the Greek goddess Artemis and her Roman counterpart Diana, goddess of the hunt. The sign of the horns is also often associated with protection against the evil eye.
