Gorgeous Victorian era witch's heart brooch in 14k gold with Scottish agates. Circa late 19th century, 1880s.
A witch's heart is one with a "tail" that curves to one side, usually the right.
They were often given as tokens of love and protection from evil.
Although this particular symbol has been documented as far back as the 15th century, heart-shaped brooches such as this one gained popularity in jewelry during the 17th century in Scotland. Known as a Luckenbooth, named for the booths where they were sold in Edinburgh. However, not all Luckenbooth brooches are witch's hearts (with the curved tail). Some are hearts or double hearts topped with crowns.
Most are silver, but this is a scarce specimen, fashioned in 14k gold and set with Scottish agates, including bloodstone, carnelian, and jasper.
This piece is marked with a British registered design number indicating it was designed and likely made around 1887. It is unmarked but tested as 14k gold.
